Quick DETAILS
5 Night Surf camp

This is the one kids talk about for years.

Five nights at Moirs Point Camp in Mangawhai, surfing twice a day at some of New Zealand’s best beginner and intermediate breaks, and a packed schedule of activities from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave.

We partner with Aotearoa Surf to run this camp and between us we’ve been doing it since 2002. Canterbury kids fly up to Auckland and we take care of everything from there. If your child has surfed with us before, this is the natural next step. If they haven’t, it’s still a brilliant place to start.

This is a proper week away. Kids arrive on Sunday and don’t come home until Friday, and every day in between is full from start to finish.

Mornings and afternoons are built around surfing. Two sessions every day at Mangawhai Heads or Te Arai Beach, with kids grouped by age and ability so everyone is working at the right level. Beginners catch their first waves. More experienced surfers push into green waves and start working on turns.

After surfing, camp has everything kids love,- kayaking, paddleboarding, the waterslide, a confidence course and whatever’s happening as part of our organised activities. Evenings are campfires, movies, BBQs, sunset swims and maybe a dance off, which gets everyone excited

On Thursday the camp runs a fun surf competition with heats at Te Arai Beach. Parents and caregivers are welcome to come along and watch, it’s a great way to see just how far their kid has come across the week.

No phones. No screens. Just a week of the kind of outdoor adventure kids genuinely thrive on.

Canterbury kids fly from Christchurch to Auckland. It’s a short flight and we make the whole process as straightforward as possible for families.

Once the camp transport departs Auckland Airport, your child is fully supervised all the way to Mangawhai and for the entire week.

Ages 12 and over – unaccompanied travel

Children aged 12 and over can fly as unaccompanied minors on most airlines. Our team will be waiting at the Auckland Domestic Airport to meet them and get them onto camp transport. Book the airport transfer at checkout and we’ll handle everything from arrival.

Ages 8 to 11 – accompanied to the terminal

Airlines require children aged 8 to 11 flying unaccompanied to be met at the arrival gate by a nominated adult. This can be a parent, caregiver or trusted family friend. That person accompanies your child from the gate to just outside the terminal, where our team will be waiting to take over from there. Once handed over, your child is with us for the full week.

Auckland Airport pickup times:

  • 12.30pm – Auckland Domestic Airport departure
  • 3.00pm – Arrive at camp

Return drop-off – Auckland Airport:

  • 11.00am – Depart camp
  • 1.30pm – Auckland Domestic Airport

Airport transfer is $100 additional per camper and can be added at checkout. Parents are also welcome to arrange their own travel and drop children directly at camp if preferred.

Also bus options available if you are already in Auckland

We ask parents to let kids settle in and make friends without visits during camp. The exception is Thursday’s surf competition – parents and caregivers are warmly welcome to come to Te Arai Beach to watch and cheer.

All dietary needs are catered for – vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free and more. Camp is strictly nut and honey free. Note all requirements when booking.

Can my child bring their phone?

No phones or electronic devices are allowed at camp. This is part of what makes the week work so well.

Is a payment plan available?

Yes – a 50% deposit secures the booking with the balance due before camp. Get in touch if you need a different arrangement.

What if the camp I want is full?

Contact us to be added to the waitlist. Spots do come up through cancellations.

Who runs the camp?

The camp is run by Aotearoa Surf, one of New Zealand’s most experienced surf schools operating since 2002. Orewa Surf Lessons works in partnership with Aotearoa Surf to offer this camp to our community.

What parents say

Epic adventures, the very best

reviews christchurch surf lessons sumner new zealand
My daughter came home on Friday with a wetsuit full of sand, a endless stories, and more confidence than I've seen in her in a long time. The no phones rule was the best thing about it. The Thursday surf competition was brilliant, we drove up to watch and were blown away by how far she'd come in just five days.

My 8 year old had never been away without us. I was the nervous. The team were great from the moment we booked. Clear communication, photo updates every day, and a kid who came home absolutely glowing. The campfire nights and waterslide got mentioned just as much as the surfing.

Our daughter is quiet and takes time to warm up in new situations. I wasnt sure how she would go with a group of kids she never met. By day two I saw in the photo updates she made friends and was smiling. Friday she was hugging everyone goodbye. The instructors clearly understand kids, not just surfing. We'll be back every year until she reaches 15.

My daughter flew up on her own for the first time and I won't pretend I wasn't nervous. The Christchurch Surf Lessons team were brilliant from the moment we booked. Clear on the logistics, easy to reach with questions and she was met at the airport exactly as promised. She came home on Friday with sand in everything she owns and more confidence than I've seen in a long time. Already asking about next year.
